Resolutions – Going Green Smoothie

by alison on January 26, 2012

Maybe it’s about that time when your New Years resolutions are flagging. Or maybe you’re like me and just really…really behind, so February is the start of something healthy. I needed a reboot to my sluggish system. Instead of a painful cleanse or fast, which I dearly wish I had the will power to do, but let’s face it, I do not, I decided to go green.

I joined the cult of the green smoothie people and have been concocting green blended mixtures each morning for a week now. There are loads of fresh leafy dark greens at the markets this time of year – think kale, collards, spinach and romaine.  Pulverizing these antioxidant rich winter veggies into frothy beverage has proven to be the best way I’ve ever found to get greens in my system.

And I was surprised to find that one smoothie gives me plenty of energy for the entire morning. Because you’re blending and not juicing greens, you’re consuming healthy fiber. Here are two different recipe’s for green smoothies. I like to add a tablespoon of Chia seeds or flax seeds for Omega 3 oils and protein, you can find them at any health food store or Whole Foods.

Apple Carrot Green Smoothie

  • 1/2 apple chopped
  • 1 handful spinach
  • 1 handful kale
  • 2 tbs lemon juice
  • 1 cup carrot juice
  • 1/2 cup water

Cocoa Banana Spinach Smoothie

  • 1 banana
  • 1 handful spinach
  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk
  • 1 Tbs unsweetened cocoa powder

Blend in blender and drink up.
